It’s surprisingly easy to lose track of regular payments. A streaming service you signed up for years ago, a magazine subscription you rarely read, or a gym membership you no longer visit can quietly continue charging your account month after month. On their own, these expenses may seem small, but together they can add up to hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.

Set aside some time every few months to review your bank or credit card statements. Look for recurring payments that appear each month or annually. If you don’t immediately recognise a charge, take a moment to find out what it’s for before assuming it’s necessary.

Ask yourself a simple question: “If I didn’t already have this, would I pay for it today?” If the answer is no, it may be time to cancel. This doesn’t mean cutting back on everything you enjoy. It’s about making sure your money is going towards services that still provide value.

Don’t overlook memberships that automatically renew. Clubs, software, antivirus programs, and online services often continue unless you actively cancel them. Adding renewal dates to your calendar can help you decide whether you still want to keep them before another payment is taken.

If you share subscriptions with a partner or family member, check whether you’re accidentally paying for the same service twice. You may be able to switch to a shared plan or cancel one account altogether without losing access.

Once you’ve trimmed the unnecessary costs, consider putting the savings somewhere useful. Even setting aside the amount you were previously spending each month can help build an emergency fund, cover future travel, or pay for something you’ve been meaning to do.

Reviewing your regular payments is about making sure every dollar has a purpose. A quick check a few times a year can free up money for the things that matter most to you today, rather than the things you signed up for and forgot about.
