Give Your Fridge a Proper Reset

Give Your Fridge a Proper Reset

The fridge is one of those appliances that can become increasingly chaotic without you noticing. A jar gets pushed to the back, vegetables disappear underneath a bag of salad and leftovers are forgotten until you’re not quite sure whether they’re still worth eating.

You don’t need to empty the entire fridge and scrub every shelf in one afternoon. Start with a simple reset. Take out anything you’re certain has gone bad, then group similar foods together so you can see what you actually have.

Put food that needs to be eaten soon somewhere visible. If you’ve got leftover roast chicken, an opened tub of yoghurt or vegetables approaching their use-by date, keeping them at eye level can make you more likely to use them rather than buying something else.

It’s also worth checking the dates carefully. A use-by date is about food safety and should be followed, while a best-before date generally relates to quality. Don’t automatically throw everything away simply because a best-before date has passed, but use your judgement and follow food-safety guidance.

The fridge door is another area that can become overloaded. It’s convenient for bottles, sauces and condiments, but don’t assume every item belongs there. Check the storage instructions on packaging and keep foods where they’re best stored.

Once you’ve cleared some space, resist the temptation to fill it immediately. A less crowded fridge makes it easier to see what you have and allows you to keep track of leftovers. You may also discover ingredients you forgot you bought.

This is a good opportunity to make a simple “use first” section. It could be one shelf or container where you place food that needs attention. When you’re deciding what to cook, look there before opening a new packet or heading to the supermarket.

You might be surprised by how much food you can use simply by knowing what’s already in the fridge. A few minutes of organisation can save money, reduce waste, and make deciding what to have for dinner considerably easier.

Your fridge doesn’t need to be perfectly arranged. It just needs to work for you. If you can open the door and immediately see what needs using, you’ve already made the kitchen a little more efficient.
