Give Your Freezer a Proper Clean-Out

The freezer is one of those places that’s remarkably easy to forget about. A forgotten container can sit behind the frozen peas for months, while half a bag of something unidentifiable slowly develops a layer of ice. Every so often, it’s worth giving the freezer a proper clear-out—not just to make more room, but to find out what you actually have.
Start by taking everything out and checking dates and labels. If you can’t identify something because the packaging has disappeared or the label has faded, it’s probably time to let it go.
When in doubt about whether food has been safely stored, don’t take unnecessary chances.
Look for freezer burn, too. It doesn’t necessarily make food unsafe, but it can affect the texture and flavour. Items covered in excessive ice or badly damaged packaging may no longer be worth keeping.
Once it’s empty, clean the shelves and drawers according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If your freezer needs defrosting, allow enough time for the ice to melt naturally rather than trying to remove it with a sharp object, which could damage the appliance.
Then take a look at what’s left. You may discover ingredients you’d forgotten about: leftover soup, frozen fruit, a portion of homemade curry, or enough bread to last several weeks.
This is also a good opportunity to organise things according to how you actually use them. Keep frequently used items somewhere easy to reach and group similar foods together. Clear containers can make it much easier to see what you’ve got.
Labelling leftovers with the date can prevent the same problem from happening again. You don’t need an elaborate system—a piece of masking tape and a marker can do the job perfectly well.
A freezer that’s organised properly can save money as well as space. Seeing what you already have makes it less tempting to buy another packet of something that’s already buried at the back. You might even find dinner hiding in there.
