A hotel can look perfectly located on a map. Then you arrive and discover that the “short walk to the town centre” involves a steep hill, uneven pavement, or a 25-minute trek in the heat. Distance is only one part of deciding whether accommodation is genuinely convenient.

When researching a destination, look beyond the number of kilometres. Open the route in a mapping app and check the actual walking path. Look for hills, stairs, busy roads, crossings, and sections where there may be no footpath.

This matters particularly when you’re planning to visit several places on foot. A hotel that is close to one attraction may be surprisingly far from restaurants, supermarkets, public transport, or the areas where you’ll spend most of your time.

Pay attention to the terrain as well. A destination can appear relatively flat on a map but still have steep streets. Coastal towns, historic centres, and cities built on hills can be particularly deceptive when you’re judging distances from a screen.

If you’re travelling with luggage, think about the journey from the station or bus stop to your accommodation. Twenty minutes with a small day bag may be perfectly manageable, while the same walk with a suitcase can be considerably less appealing.

Street-level imagery can sometimes provide useful clues about the surroundings. Look at the entrance to the accommodation, nearby footpaths, and the route you would actually take. Recent guest reviews can also reveal details that aren’t mentioned in the listing.

None of this means you need to avoid walking. A pleasant stroll can be one of the best ways to experience a destination. The important thing is knowing what you’re signing up for before you arrive.

A convenient location isn’t necessarily the one with the shortest distance on a map. Sometimes, the better choice is the place with the flatter route, easier transport connection, or shops and restaurants just around the corner.
