Rushing through an airport is rarely a good way to start a holiday. Long queues, security checks, and last-minute gate changes can make even experienced travellers feel stressed. Giving yourself a little extra time before your flight can make the entire journey more enjoyable.

Airports have changed over the years. Many now rely on self-service kiosks, electronic boarding passes, and automated bag drops. While these systems are designed to speed things up, they can take a little longer if you’re using them for the first time. Arriving early gives you time to ask for help without feeling pressured.

Security screening is another reason not to leave things until the last minute. Removing laptops, liquids, or jackets can take longer than expected, and queues often vary depending on the time of day. Building extra time into your schedule means you’re less likely to feel flustered if the line is longer than usual.

It’s also worth considering the journey to the airport itself. Traffic, roadworks, public transport delays, or finding a parking space can all take longer than planned. Leaving home earlier provides a buffer if something unexpected happens along the way.

Once you’re through security, you can actually begin to enjoy your trip. Have a coffee, browse the bookshop, or simply sit near your departure gate and watch the planes come and go. Starting your holiday in a relaxed frame of mind is far more enjoyable than sprinting through the terminal.

If you’re travelling with medication, mobility aids, or require assistance at the airport, allowing additional time is even more important. Most airports are happy to help, but advance notice and an unhurried schedule make the experience smoother for everyone.

A holiday should begin with excitement, not unnecessary stress. Leaving a little earlier than you think you need to might seem like a small change. But it can make the first day of your journey every bit as enjoyable as the destination itself.
