A Home Inventory Is Easier Than You Think

Most of us couldn’t list everything we own. From furniture and appliances to jewellery, tools, and family heirlooms, it’s easy to underestimate the value of the belongings we’ve collected over the years. Creating a simple home inventory might not sound exciting, but it can be incredibly useful if you ever need to make an insurance claim after a fire, burglary, or severe storm.

You don’t need to complete it all in one afternoon. Start with one room and work your way through the house over several weeks. Take clear photos of larger items, make a note of the brand and model where possible, and keep receipts for newer purchases if you still have them.

Pay particular attention to valuable or sentimental items. Antiques, artwork, musical instruments, cameras, and inherited jewellery are worth recording individually. If something is especially valuable, check whether your insurance policy provides enough cover or whether it needs to be listed separately.

A digital inventory is often the easiest to maintain. Store your photos and notes in a secure cloud service or on an external hard drive so they’re available even if your computer or phone is damaged. Updating the inventory once a year, or after a major purchase, helps keep it accurate.

While you’re documenting your belongings, it’s also a good opportunity to declutter. You may come across items you no longer use or duplicates that could be donated, sold, or given to family members. The result is not only a more accurate inventory but also a home that’s easier to organise.

If you have adult children or someone who helps manage your affairs, let them know where the inventory is stored. Should they ever need to assist with an insurance claim or estate matters, having everything in one place can save a great deal of time and stress.

You hope you’ll never need a home inventory. But if the unexpected happens, you’ll be glad you took the time to create one. A few hours of preparation today can make recovering from a difficult situation much simpler tomorrow.
