A Good Travel Day Starts With the Right Shoes

You can plan the perfect itinerary and still end up miserable if your feet hurt by lunchtime. Travel often involves more walking than you expect.

Airports, museums, train stations, historic streets, markets, and sightseeing stops can add thousands of steps to an ordinary day. The shoes that feel perfectly comfortable for a quick trip to the shops may not be suitable for eight hours of exploring.

Choose footwear you’ve already worn and know is comfortable. A holiday isn’t the ideal time to test a brand-new pair, particularly if you’re planning long walks.

Fit matters more than appearance. Your feet can swell during the day, so shoes should provide enough room without allowing your foot to slide around. If you use orthotics or supportive insoles at home, make sure your travel shoes can accommodate them comfortably.

Think about the destination, too. Smooth pavements in a city centre are very different from cobblestones, gravel tracks, beaches, or walking trails. If your itinerary includes several types of terrain, you may need more than one suitable pair.

Socks can make a difference as well. Breathable, moisture-wicking socks can help reduce friction and keep your feet more comfortable during long days. Pack a spare pair in your day bag if you’re likely to be out for hours.

Don’t forget your feet once you arrive. Give them a chance to rest after a long day, particularly if you’ve been walking more than usual. A short break can make tomorrow’s sightseeing considerably more enjoyable.

And don’t feel that comfortable footwear has to look like traditional “walking shoes.” There are plenty of options that combine support with a style you’re happy to wear around town.

The best travel shoes are rarely the ones that look most impressive in your suitcase. They’re the ones you forget you’re wearing.
