A comfortable tv room can become the heart of your home, a place to enjoy favourite shows, catch the rugby, or unwind with a good movie after a busy day. Whether you are setting up a new space or refreshing an existing one, a few simple choices can make watching television easier and more enjoyable.

Choose the Right Spot

The best TV room is usually a quiet space with good access to power points and a doorway that is easy to reach. Many New Zealand homes get plenty of afternoon sun, so think about glare on the screen. Curtains or blinds that can be drawn will help you see the picture clearly at any time of day. A room that stays warm in winter is also worth considering, since Kiwi homes can feel chilly in the cooler months.

Seating That Supports You

Seating is the most important part of any TV room. Look for a chair or sofa with a firm seat, good back support and arms that help you stand up with ease. A recliner or lift chair can be a welcome option for anyone who likes to put their feet up. Keep a small side table close by for a cuppa, your glasses and the remote control.

Screen Size and Placement

Place the television at eye level when you are seated, so you are not straining your neck. A distance of roughly two to three times the screen height from your chair is a good guide. Larger screens with clear text and subtitles can make programmes easier to follow. Consider wall mounting the screen to free up floor space, and keep cables tidy to reduce trip hazards.

Lighting and Sound

Soft, warm lighting behind or beside the television can reduce eye strain during evening viewing. Avoid placing bright lamps directly in front of the screen. If hearing is a concern, a soundbar or wireless headphones can bring dialogue into clearer focus without turning up the volume for everyone else in the home.

Keep It Safe and Cosy

A well-planned TV room should have clear walkways, secure rugs and enough space to move around. Add a soft throw, a few cushions and perhaps a footstool for extra comfort. A simple universal remote with large buttons can also make life easier.
