The Train Station May Not Have a Lift

A train station can look like the obvious way to get around a new city. The map says it is close to your hotel, the journey looks simple, and there is no need to deal with traffic. But the distance between the platform and the street can be a different story.

Some stations have lifts and escalators. Others rely heavily on stairs, have lifts that serve only certain platforms, or require passengers to use a different entrance for step-free access.

This is easy to overlook when planning a trip because journey planners tend to focus on where you are going rather than what happens between the train and the pavement.

Before travelling, look at the official transport authority’s accessibility information for the stations you expect to use. Search for the specific station rather than assuming every stop on the network offers the same facilities.

Pay attention to the route at both ends of the journey. A hotel may be a short walk from one station, but that station could have a long underground passage, a steep entrance, or several flights of stairs. Another station a few minutes further away may offer a much easier route.

If you are travelling with luggage, this matters even if you normally have no difficulty walking. A suitcase changes how easily you can manage stairs, crowded platforms, and uneven surfaces.

It is also worth having a backup plan. If a lift is temporarily out of service, you do not want to discover the problem only after arriving with luggage and a tight connection. Knowing the nearest accessible station or having a taxi option in mind gives you another way forward.

Do not rely entirely on photographs or reviews from other travellers. Facilities can change, and accessibility information on the official transport website is more likely to reflect the network’s current arrangements.

A journey can be perfectly manageable once you know what to expect. The useful question is not simply, “How close is the station?” It is, “How will I actually get from the street to the platform?”
