The Hotel Room Details Worth Asking About

A hotel room can look perfectly comfortable in photographs and still turn out to be inconvenient when you arrive. The pictures rarely tell you how far the room is from the lift, whether there are stairs to reach it, or how much space there is around the bed.

If mobility, balance, or simply comfort matters to you, these details are worth asking about before booking. You do not need to describe your entire medical history. A few practical questions can give you a much clearer idea of what to expect.

Start with access to the room. Ask whether there are stairs between the entrance, reception, lift, and your room. Some older properties have lifts that do not serve every floor, meaning a supposedly lift-accessible room may still involve a short flight of stairs.

The bathroom deserves particular attention. Find out whether the shower is step-free, whether there is a fixed shower seat, or whether the bath has a high side to climb over. A photograph can make a bathroom look spacious while hiding a surprisingly awkward entrance.

Room layout matters too. Ask where the bed sits in relation to the bathroom and whether there is enough space to move comfortably around it. If you use a walking stick, walker, or other mobility aid, say so when making the enquiry.

Do not forget the route into the property itself. A hotel may have a beautiful entrance but a separate accessible entrance around the side. Knowing where to go can save an unnecessary walk with luggage.

If you are unsure about an answer, ask the hotel to describe the room rather than simply confirming that it is “accessible.” Specific questions usually produce much more useful answers.

The goal is not to find a perfect room. It is to avoid discovering important details only after you have arrived tired, carrying luggage, and ready for a shower. A few questions before booking can make the difference between a room that looks good online and one that actually works for you.
