The Shopping Bag Collection Has Got Out of Hand

There is probably a cupboard, drawer, or corner of the pantry where reusable shopping bags go to multiply. You buy one because you forgot yours at home, receive another from a shop, then fold each new addition into the growing collection.

Reusable bags are useful, of course. The problem comes when you have far more than you could possibly use on a normal shopping trip.

Take them all out and spread them somewhere you have enough room to see what you’ve accumulated. You’ll probably find several bags that are almost identical, a few promotional ones you never use, and perhaps some that have stretched handles, damaged seams, or stains.

Keep the ones that are genuinely useful. A couple of strong bags for groceries, a smaller one for unexpected purchases, and perhaps an insulated bag for food that needs to stay cool may be all you need.

Think about where you actually shop. If you regularly visit the supermarket, farmers’ market, or local shops, choose bags that are comfortable to carry and easy to fold or store. There’s little point keeping an enormous collection if you always end up grabbing the same two.

Give the bags you’re keeping a proper clean if the material allows it. Shopping bags can come into contact with food, spills, and dirty surfaces, so check the care instructions and wash them when necessary. Make sure they’re completely dry before folding them away.

For bags you no longer need, consider whether someone else could use them. Friends, family, community groups, or charity shops may have a use for clean, sturdy bags. Damaged ones may be suitable for other household purposes depending on their condition.

The real trick is deciding where the remaining bags will live. Keep them somewhere convenient enough that you’ll remember to take them with you. A neatly folded collection hidden at the back of a cupboard isn’t much help if you always remember it after you’ve arrived at the shops.

You don’t need to eliminate every spare bag. The goal is simply to have a useful number rather than an accidental collection.

Reusable shopping bags were introduced to reduce waste and make shopping easier. If yours have taken over an entire cupboard, it may be time to give the cupboard back.
