The bedside drawer has a strange habit of becoming a storage unit for things that don’t really belong anywhere else. Old receipts, spare batteries, reading glasses, charging cables, tissues, coins, and perhaps a mystery key can all end up sharing the same small space.

Because you only open it for a few seconds at a time, the mess can go unnoticed. Then one evening you need something in a hurry and find yourself digging through everything by torchlight.

Take everything out and put it on the bed or another clear surface. This is easier than trying to organise the drawer around its existing clutter. You’ll probably find that much of what is inside doesn’t need to be there.

Start with rubbish. Old receipts, empty medication packets, dried-up pens, and packaging can go straight into the appropriate bin. Then separate things that belong elsewhere. If a screwdriver, sewing kit, or pile of batteries has migrated to the bedroom, return it to its proper home.

Next, decide what genuinely earns its place beside the bed. Perhaps you regularly use reading glasses, hand cream, a book, or your phone charger. Those items make sense. Five different charging cables for devices you no longer own probably don’t.

Be careful with medicines, too. If you keep medication beside your bed, store it according to the instructions on the label and check whether it needs particular temperature or storage conditions. Don’t use the bedside drawer as a dumping ground for old or unused medicines.

Once you’ve reduced the contents, give the drawer itself a wipe before putting anything back. A small tray or divider can help keep frequently used items together without turning the drawer into another collection of little compartments.

This is also a good opportunity to think about safety. Keep anything sharp, loose batteries, or other potentially hazardous items somewhere appropriate rather than allowing them to accumulate beside the bed.

The whole job can take less than 15 minutes, but the difference is noticeable. Instead of rummaging through a drawer full of forgotten objects, you’ll know exactly where the things you actually use are.
