Are You Still Paying for Paper Statements?

Are You Still Paying for Paper Statements?

Bank statements used to arrive in the letterbox every month without anyone giving them a second thought. Today, many banks encourage customers to receive statements electronically instead. If you still receive paper statements, it may be worth checking whether you’re paying a fee for the privilege.

The charge isn’t necessarily obvious. It might appear as a small line on your account, or the bank may have changed its statement options as part of an account update. A few dollars here and there can seem insignificant, but recurring fees have a habit of adding up over a year.

Before switching to digital statements, though, think about why you receive paper copies. Some people like having a physical record of their transactions, particularly when managing household finances or keeping paperwork for tax and other purposes. There’s nothing wrong with that. The important thing is knowing what you’re paying for and deciding whether it still makes sense.

If you do switch to electronic statements, don’t simply assume they’ll always be available. Check how far back you can access them through your bank’s website or app and whether older statements can be downloaded and saved. It can be useful to keep important financial records somewhere you can find them later.

Digital statements also come with their own consideration: access. If you’re not confident using your banking app or website, ask your bank to explain exactly where statements are stored and how to download them. You don’t need to become an expert in online banking; you just need to know how to retrieve your own records.

And if you prefer paper, ask whether there are alternatives. Some accounts may offer different statement frequencies or delivery options, while fees can vary depending on the type of account you have.

The point isn’t that paper statements are outdated or that everyone should go digital. It’s simply another small bank charge worth checking. If you’ve had the same account for years, a quick look at your statement settings could tell you whether you’re paying for something you no longer need.
