Check Your Airport Transfer Before You Fly

There’s a particular kind of travel stress that starts the moment you collect your luggage. You walk out of the airport, look around, and realise you have no idea how you’re getting to your hotel.
The taxi queue is long, the public transport signs are confusing, and the driver you thought was meeting you is nowhere to be seen. It’s an easy situation to avoid with a little planning before you leave home.
Airport transfers are worth checking when you book your flights, particularly if you’re arriving late at night, travelling somewhere unfamiliar or staying well outside the main city. A hotel might offer a transfer service, but don’t assume it is included in the room rate. Check the price, whether it needs to be booked in advance and where you’re expected to meet the driver.
If you’re using public transport, look beyond simply finding the nearest train or bus. Check the operating hours and whether services are still running when your flight lands. A perfectly good airport train is not much use if your plane arrives at 11.30pm and the last service left an hour ago.
Taxis and ride-hailing services can have their own quirks, too. Some airports have designated pick-up areas, while others require passengers to walk to a particular terminal or car park. Check the airport’s instructions rather than relying entirely on what another traveller tells you.
It’s also sensible to save the address of your accommodation somewhere you can access without an internet connection. A screenshot with the hotel name, address, and local phone number can be useful if your mobile data isn’t working when you land.
For a road trip, think about the first journey separately from the rest of your holiday. You may be tired after a long flight, unfamiliar with the roads, and carrying luggage. If an airport shuttle, taxi or pre-booked transfer gets you to your accommodation without the extra decisions, it can be money well spent.
A holiday doesn’t officially begin when you reach your destination. It begins when you can stop worrying about how you’re going to get there.
