Your Passport May Need More Time Left

Your passport can be sitting safely in a drawer with an expiry date that’s still months away, yet that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready to travel.

Some countries require visitors to have several months of passport validity remaining beyond their planned departure or arrival date. The exact requirement varies by destination, and airlines can check travel-document requirements before allowing you to board.

This is why checking the expiry date alone isn’t enough. Before booking an overseas holiday, look up the entry requirements for the country you’re visiting. New Zealand’s SafeTravel service provides destination-specific travel advice, including information about passports and entry requirements.

It’s particularly easy to overlook this when you’ve booked a trip many months in advance. A passport with nine months remaining today may have considerably less validity by the time your holiday arrives.

Don’t forget about connecting countries, either. If you’re changing planes somewhere, check whether the transit arrangements create additional passport or visa requirements. A short stopover can still involve immigration rules, depending on the airport and itinerary.

If your passport doesn’t meet the requirements, renew it before travelling rather than hoping an airline or immigration officer will make an exception. Allow enough time for the application and delivery process, particularly if you’re travelling during a busy period.

It’s also worth checking the condition of your passport. Significant damage, missing pages, or other problems can potentially cause issues even when the expiry date is well into the future.

Once you’ve checked everything, make a note of when your passport expires. You could put a reminder in your phone several months before the date so you don’t find yourself dealing with an urgent renewal just before your next holiday.

And don’t wait until you’ve found a bargain flight to check. A cheap fare isn’t much of a bargain if your travel documents aren’t suitable for the journey.

Your passport is one of the most important things you take overseas. Checking its validity against the actual rules of your destination takes only a few minutes—and can save you from a very expensive problem later.
