A spare room can be one of the most useful spaces in a house, yet it’s often the room where things end up when nobody knows where else to put them. Boxes, old furniture, and bags of belongings gradually take over until opening the door feels like entering a storage unit.

If you have a room like that, you don’t necessarily need to turn it into something elaborate. Start by deciding what you would genuinely use the space for. It could become a reading room, craft area, home office, exercise space, or simply somewhere to sit quietly with a cup of tea.

The key is flexibility. A comfortable chair, small table, and good lamp can create a pleasant reading corner without taking up much space. If you occasionally have visitors, the same room could accommodate a fold-out sofa or comfortable daybed.

Storage is worth thinking about, too. Instead of filling the room with cupboards simply because there’s space, consider what you actually need to keep there. Shelving can be useful for books, craft supplies or paperwork, while labelled containers make it easier to find things without rummaging through boxes.

Good lighting can make a bigger difference than expensive furniture. If the room is mainly lit by one ceiling fixture, add a lamp suited to whatever you’ll be doing there. Natural light is another reason to keep windows clear rather than using the room purely for storage.

Don’t feel obliged to create a room that looks like something from a home magazine. The best use of the space is the one that fits your life. If you’ve always wanted somewhere to paint, write, sew, play music, or work on puzzles, this could be the opportunity to finally give that hobby some room.

And if you don’t need another personal space, the room could serve a more practical purpose. It might become a proper guest room, a place for visiting grandchildren, or somewhere family members can stay when they need a little extra space.

You don’t have to renovate or spend a fortune. Sometimes reclaiming a room simply means removing what no longer belongs there and putting the space to work. A spare room that actually gets used can add far more to your home than one that’s permanently filled with boxes.
