Build a Small Home Repair Kit

You don’t need a garage full of tools to deal with the little things that go wrong around the house. A loose cupboard handle, a picture that needs hanging or a battery that needs replacing can often be sorted with a handful of basic items.
A small home repair kit keeps those essentials together and saves you from searching through drawers whenever something needs fixing. A basic screwdriver set, tape measure, adjustable wrench, pliers and a pair of scissors are a good starting point. Add a small torch, a roll of strong tape and a few picture hooks, and you’ll have something useful for many everyday jobs.
It’s worth including a selection of spare batteries as well, but check them occasionally. Batteries can lose their charge over time, and leaking batteries can damage the device they’re stored in. Keep them somewhere dry and follow the manufacturer’s storage advice.
You might also find a small spirit level useful for hanging pictures or shelves. A pencil, some cable ties and a few different-sized screws can take up very little room but come in handy surprisingly often.
The important thing is to keep the kit somewhere accessible. If it’s buried underneath boxes in the shed, you may never bother getting it out. A sturdy toolbox or plastic container in an easy-to-reach cupboard can be a better option.
You don’t need to tackle every repair yourself. Anything involving electricity, gas, plumbing or structural work may need a qualified professional. The purpose of a basic repair kit is simply to make small, straightforward jobs easier and less frustrating.
Once you’ve put your kit together, have a look at the tools you already own before buying anything new. You may discover that you have everything you need scattered around the house.
A little preparation can make a surprising difference. When something needs tightening, measuring, hanging or securing, having the right tool within reach means you can deal with the job rather than putting it off for another day.
