Ageing is a natural part of life, but not all ageing happens the same way. Understanding the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic ageing can help New Zealand seniors make informed choices about their health and wellbeing as they grow older.

What Is Intrinsic Ageing?

Intrinsic ageing is the natural, genetically programmed process that happens to everyone over time. It is influenced by your DNA and family history, and it progresses gradually regardless of lifestyle. This type of ageing affects things like skin elasticity, metabolism, and cell renewal, and it cannot be stopped entirely.

What Is Extrinsic Ageing?

Extrinsic ageing, on the other hand, is caused by external factors and environmental exposure. This includes sun exposure, pollution, smoking, poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep. Unlike intrinsic ageing, extrinsic ageing can often be slowed or reduced through lifestyle changes, making it the area where you have the most control.

Given New Zealand’s strong UV levels, particularly during summer, sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to extrinsic ageing here. Kiwis are encouraged to take sun safety seriously, even on cooler or cloudy days.

Taking Control of Extrinsic Ageing

While intrinsic ageing is largely out of your hands, extrinsic ageing offers plenty of opportunity for positive change. Wearing sunscreen daily, staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and avoiding smoking can all make a noticeable difference over time. Regular exercise and good quality sleep also support healthier skin and overall vitality well into your senior years.

Stress management is another important factor. Chronic stress can accelerate visible signs of ageing, so activities like gentle walks, mindfulness, or spending time with family and friends can be genuinely beneficial for both mind and body.

Why This Matters for Seniors

Understanding what you can and cannot control allows for a more realistic and empowering approach to ageing. Rather than trying to reverse the natural process, focusing energy on manageable factors like sun protection, nutrition, and stress reduction can help you feel your best at any age.

Ageing well is not about stopping time. It is about making thoughtful choices that support your health, comfort, and confidence, one day at a time.
