Keep an Eye on Your Bank Statements

A bank statement can look like a list of ordinary transactions. But taking a few minutes to review it regularly can help you spot mistakes, forgotten subscriptions, unusual charges, and payments you no longer recognise.
Start by checking the transactions against your usual spending. You don’t need to remember every coffee or grocery purchase, but unfamiliar names or amounts deserve a closer look. Some businesses appear under a trading name that differs from the name you recognise, so check before assuming a transaction is fraudulent.
Recurring payments are particularly easy to overlook. Look for memberships, streaming services, insurance payments, donations, and other automatic deductions. If you no longer use a service, cancelling it could free up money every month.
Keep an eye out for duplicate charges, too. A payment that appears twice could be a simple processing error, although some businesses may temporarily show a pending transaction alongside the final charge. If you’re unsure, contact the bank or business for clarification.
Your statements can also reveal spending patterns you hadn’t noticed. Perhaps takeaway meals have become more frequent, you’re paying several small delivery fees each month, or a particular subscription has quietly increased in price.
If you see a transaction you genuinely don’t recognise, don’t ignore it. Contact your bank through an official channel and ask what steps you should take. If your card or account details may have been compromised, acting quickly can help limit potential losses.
Be careful about how you access your banking information, too. Use your bank’s official app or website rather than following links in unexpected emails or text messages.
A bank statement is a snapshot of where your money is going—and a useful opportunity to make sure every payment still makes sense.
