Keeping a Household Notebook

There are certain things you can never seem to remember when you need them. When was the last time the smoke alarm batteries were changed? What model is the washing machine? When was the hot-water cylinder serviced? Which paint colour did you use in the spare bedroom? A simple household notebook can keep all those details in one place.

It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. A sturdy notebook kept in a kitchen drawer or utility cupboard can become a practical record of the information you regularly find yourself searching for.

Start with the basics. Write down the make and model of major appliances, their purchase dates, and any warranty information. Keep receipts or copies of important documents in a separate folder if they don’t fit inside the notebook.

Maintenance records can be particularly useful. Note when the heating system was serviced, the gutters were cleaned, or the smoke alarms were checked. When something needs attention again, you’ll have a record of what was done previously.

You can also keep useful household information such as the contact details for tradespeople you’ve used and been happy with. Having the number of a reliable plumber or electrician readily available can save considerable time when something goes wrong.

If you share your home with someone else, the notebook can become a useful reference for both of you. Rather than one person being the only one who knows where everything is or who to call, important information is recorded for everyone.

Don’t include passwords, PINs, or other highly sensitive information. Those should be stored using an appropriate password manager or secure system instead.

The beauty of a household notebook is its simplicity. No app needs updating. No password needs remembering. And when the washing machine suddenly stops working, you don’t have to search through old emails to find out which model you own.
