What to Check Before Hiring a Rental Car Overseas

Hiring a car can give you much more freedom when you’re travelling. You can explore places that aren’t easily reached by public transport, stop whenever you see something interesting, and avoid having to organise every journey around a timetable. But before collecting the keys, there are a few practical details worth checking.

Start with the insurance. Don’t assume the basic rental price includes everything you’ll need. Find out what cover is included, what the excess is, and whether there are exclusions that could leave you responsible for a significant bill after an accident.

Check the fuel policy as well. Some companies require you to return the vehicle with a full tank, while others use different arrangements. Understanding the rules before driving away can prevent an unexpected charge when you return the car.

The condition of the vehicle should also be documented. Walk around the car before leaving the rental location and photograph any existing scratches, dents, cracked glass, or other damage. Make sure the rental company has recorded anything you notice.

Think about the size of the car you’re booking, too. A compact vehicle may be easier to drive and park in a busy city, while a larger vehicle might be more comfortable if you’re carrying several suitcases. Don’t choose based solely on the photographs in the booking.

It’s particularly important to check the driving rules in your destination. Speed limits, road signs, parking regulations, toll systems, and rules about mobile phones can differ considerably between countries. Find out whether you need an international driving permit before you travel.

Finally, check how the car should be returned. Know the location, opening hours, fuel requirements, and what happens if you return the vehicle outside business hours.

A few minutes spent checking the fine print and documenting the vehicle can help you avoid unnecessary costs and start your journey with greater confidence.
