Keeping in Touch With Family Who Live Overseas

Families can feel surprisingly close and far away at the same time. When children, grandchildren, siblings, or close friends move overseas, regular contact can become harder. 

Different time zones, busy schedules, and the cost of travelling can all make spontaneous visits less realistic. Fortunately, staying connected doesn’t have to depend on being in the same country.

A regular video call can become a simple family ritual. Rather than waiting until everyone happens to be available, choose a day and time that works for both sides. Even a short conversation every fortnight can feel more meaningful when it’s consistent.

Don’t limit contact to major updates. Share ordinary moments too. Send a photograph of what’s growing in the garden, show someone what you’ve been cooking, or message them about something funny that happened during your day. These small details help people feel involved in one another’s lives.

Time zones can require a little creativity. A morning coffee for you might be an evening wind-down for someone overseas. Finding a regular window that suits everyone is often easier than trying to coordinate a call whenever there’s a free moment.

Grandparents can also create their own traditions with grandchildren who live far away. Read the same book together, play a simple game over a video call, or send postcards and handwritten letters. These rituals give children something to look forward to between visits.

When you do eventually visit, don’t feel pressured to fill every minute with activities. Some of the most valuable time may simply be sitting around the kitchen table, having breakfast together, or going for a familiar walk.

With a little consistency and creativity, family members living thousands of kilometres away can still be part of the everyday moments that matter.
