Few things create instant anxiety like reaching into your pocket and finding nothing. You retrace your steps, check the car, search the kitchen bench, and wonder where you could possibly have left your phone. Before assuming it’s gone for good, there are several things you can try.

The first step is to use your phone’s built-in location service. Apple devices can be located through Find My, while Android phones can be located through Find My Device. From another device, you may be able to see the phone’s approximate location, make it play a sound, or lock it remotely.

If you think the phone is somewhere nearby, making it play a sound can be particularly useful. Even if you’ve left it under a cushion or at the bottom of a bag, hearing it ring may save you from turning the entire house upside down.

If the location shows that you’ve left it somewhere else, don’t immediately head out to retrieve it. Consider whether the location is somewhere you recognise and whether it’s safe to go there. If you believe the phone has been stolen, contact your mobile provider and consider reporting it to the police rather than confronting anyone yourself.

A screen lock is one of the most important precautions you can take before your phone goes missing. Use a PIN, password, fingerprint, or facial recognition so that someone who finds your device can’t immediately access your personal information.

It’s also worth making sure your phone is backed up regularly. Photos, contacts, messages, and other important information can often be restored to a replacement device if your data has been backed up properly.

Take a few minutes today to check that your phone’s location and backup features are switched on. It’s much easier to prepare while the phone is safely in your hand than after it disappears.

Losing your phone doesn’t have to mean losing everything stored on it. A little preparation can make a stressful situation considerably easier to handle.
