Start with the location. A property described as being “close to everything” may still require a car or a long walk to reach shops, restaurants, or attractions. Look at the address on a map and check the distance to the places you’re most likely to visit.
Pay attention to the layout as well. If stairs are difficult, don’t assume that a property described as having multiple bedrooms is all on one level. Check whether the main bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living areas are easily accessible.
The bathroom deserves particular attention. A walk-in shower can be considerably easier to use than a bath with a high side, while handrails or a non-slip surface may make a difference to comfort and confidence. If accessibility is important, contact the host directly rather than relying on vague descriptions.
Look carefully at what’s included in the price. Cleaning fees, service charges, linen costs, parking fees, and other extras can significantly change the final amount. Make sure you understand the total cost before paying a deposit.
Read recent reviews rather than relying solely on the property’s photographs. Guests often mention practical details that aren’t obvious from a listing, such as noise from nearby roads, steep driveways, uncomfortable beds, or unreliable heating.
Cancellation conditions are worth checking too. Plans can change unexpectedly, and understanding when you’re entitled to a refund can save considerable stress later.
A holiday house should make your trip easier, not create a list of problems to solve when you arrive. Taking a little extra time before booking can help ensure that the property works for the way you actually travel.
