Is Dark Chocolate Really Good for Your Heart?

For many Kiwi seniors, a small square of chocolate after dinner feels like a harmless treat. The good news is that dark chocolate may be better for your heart than you think.

What the Research Says

Dark chocolate is made from cacao, which is naturally rich in flavanols, a type of antioxidant. These compounds help protect blood vessels from damage caused by free radicals. Several studies have linked moderate dark chocolate intake to improved blood flow, healthier blood pressure levels and better function of the arteries. Flavanols may also help keep platelets from becoming too sticky, which is important for reducing the risk of blood clots that can lead to heart attack or stroke.

Dark chocolate is also a source of magnesium, a mineral that supports normal heart rhythm and healthy blood pressure, both of which become increasingly important with age.

Not All Chocolate Is Equal

The heart benefits mostly apply to dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, ideally 70% or more. Milk chocolate and white chocolate contain far fewer flavanols and much more added sugar and fat, so they do not offer the same advantages. When shopping, look for chocolate labelled with a high percentage of cocoa solids and minimal added sugar.

Moderation Matters

While dark chocolate offers heart-supporting compounds, it is still high in calories and contains saturated fat and some caffeine. Eating too much can work against your health goals, particularly for those managing weight, blood sugar or blood pressure. A small piece, around one to two squares a day, is generally considered a sensible amount. If you take blood-thinning medication or have caffeine sensitivity, it is worth having a chat with your GP first.

A Simple Addition to a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle

Dark chocolate should never replace a balanced diet, regular movement or prescribed medication. Instead, think of it as a small, enjoyable addition to an overall heart-healthy pattern that includes plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and oily fish, all readily available across New Zealand.

So next time you reach for a treat, choosing a square of good quality dark chocolate could be a small step that supports your heart, along with everything else you are already doing to stay well.
