Many of us use only a small fraction of what our smartphones can do. We make calls, send messages, take photos, and perhaps browse the internet. Yet tucked away in the settings are features that can make everyday life easier without downloading a single new app.

One of the most useful is the built-in calculator. It can quickly work out percentages when you’re shopping, convert measurements while cooking, or help split the cost of a meal with friends. Many phones also include a level, a magnifier for reading small print, and a voice recorder for capturing reminders or family stories.

Another feature worth exploring is the weather app. Rather than simply checking the temperature, it often provides forecasts by the hour, wind conditions, sunrise and sunset times, and weather alerts. This can be particularly helpful if you’re planning a walk, gardening, or travelling.

Most smartphones also include a “Do Not Disturb” mode. It allows you to silence calls and notifications while you’re sleeping or enjoying uninterrupted time, while still letting important contacts reach you if needed. Once you’ve used it, you may wonder how you managed without it.

If you’re prone to misplacing your phone around the house, spend a few minutes learning how to use its “Find My” feature. Depending on your device, it may be able to ring your phone even when it’s on silent, helping you locate it in seconds.

You don’t need to master every feature overnight. Pick one new tool each month and see how it fits into your routine. Before long, you’ll find yourself using your phone with much more confidence.
