Digital Decluttering Starts With One Folder

Paper isn’t the only thing that creates clutter. Over the years, our computers and phones quietly fill up with downloaded documents, duplicate photos, old screenshots, and files we no longer need. When everything is saved in the same place, finding an important document can quickly become frustrating.
You don’t need to organise your entire device in one afternoon. Start with a single folder, such as Downloads or Documents. Delete files you no longer need, then move the important ones into clearly labelled folders. Categories like “Travel,” “Health,” “Finances,” and “Home” make it much easier to find information later.
Giving files meaningful names can also save time. Instead of leaving a document called “Scan001” or “IMG_4587,” rename it to something more descriptive, such as “Travel Insurance 2026” or “Home Insurance Policy.” You’ll thank yourself the next time you need it.
As you organise your files, take the opportunity to back up anything that’s important. Family photos, legal documents, and financial records are worth saving to a trusted cloud service or an external hard drive. Having a second copy provides peace of mind if your computer or phone is ever lost or damaged.
It’s also worth creating a habit of tidying up regularly. Spending ten minutes once a month deleting unnecessary files is much easier than tackling several years’ worth of digital clutter all at once.
If you’re unsure about deleting something, move it into a folder labelled “Review Later.” If you haven’t needed it after a few months, you’ll probably feel more confident removing it.
A well-organised device is much like a well-organised home. Everything is easier to find, there’s less unnecessary clutter, and everyday tasks take less time.
