An overflowing inbox can feel overwhelming. After years of newsletters, shopping receipts, appointment reminders, and promotional offers, it’s easy to end up with thousands of unread emails. The good news is that you don’t have to delete everything to get back in control.

Start with the easiest task. Search for newsletters or promotional emails you no longer read and unsubscribe from them. Most legitimate emails include an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message. Reducing the number of new emails arriving each day is often more effective than deleting old ones.

Next, create a few simple folders. You might have one for bills, another for travel bookings, one for medical appointments, and another for family. Moving important emails into clearly labelled folders makes them much easier to find when you need them.

Don’t worry about achieving an empty inbox overnight. Instead, aim to spend 10 or 15 minutes every few days deleting unwanted messages and filing the ones you want to keep. Small, regular efforts are usually more manageable than trying to organise years’ worth of emails in one sitting.

It’s also worth learning how to use the search function. Rather than scrolling through hundreds of messages, you can often find what you’re looking for by typing a person’s name, a company, or a keyword into the search bar. It’s one of the most useful email features, yet many people rarely use it.

Finally, be selective about what you keep. Airline boarding passes from years ago or delivery notifications for purchases you’ve already received probably don’t need to stay in your inbox forever. Deleting them can make the important messages stand out.

Email should help you stay organised. With a few simple habits, it can become a useful tool rather than another source of clutter. A tidier inbox makes it easier to find what matters and gives you one less thing to think about each day.
