Why It’s a Good Idea to Review Your Direct Debits

Direct debits make paying bills easy. Once they’re set up, your electricity, insurance, phone, and other regular payments happen automatically. That convenience is one of their biggest advantages, but it also means it’s easy to forget about them altogether.
Every year or so, take a few minutes to review every direct debit linked to your bank account. Check that you still recognise each payment and that you’re receiving the service you’re paying for. You may discover a membership you no longer use, an insurance policy that’s been replaced, or a subscription you thought you’d already cancelled.
It’s also worth checking whether the payment amount has changed. Some services increase their prices over time, and because the money leaves your account automatically, you might not notice the difference. Reviewing your statements helps you understand where your money is going and whether you’re still getting good value.
If you’ve recently changed banks or opened a new account, make sure your direct debits have been transferred correctly. Missing an important payment because it was linked to an old account can result in unnecessary fees or service interruptions.
Keep a simple list of your regular payments, including when they’re due and what they’re for. Having everything in one place makes it easier to budget and can be especially helpful if a family member ever needs to assist you with your finances.
Automatic payments are a useful tool, but they’re not something you should set up and forget forever. A quick annual review can help you stay in control of your spending and ensure your money is being used where it matters most.
Technology makes paying bills easier than ever. A few minutes spent reviewing your direct debits can give you greater confidence that your finances are running just as smoothly as you expect.
