Most of us keep important phone numbers on our mobile. But if your phone battery goes flat, your device is misplaced, or someone else needs to contact your family during an emergency, those numbers may not be easy to access. That’s why it’s worth keeping a printed emergency contact list somewhere obvious at home.

Start with the people you would want contacted first. Include close family members, trusted neighbours, and friends who live nearby. It’s also helpful to list your GP, preferred pharmacy, and any specialists you see regularly. If you have a home security provider or roadside assistance membership, add those numbers too.

Place the list somewhere easy to find, such as on the fridge, inside a kitchen cupboard, or near the telephone if you still have a landline. Let a family member know where you’ve kept it so they can find it quickly if needed.

While you’re putting the list together, include any important medical information that could be useful in an emergency. This might include allergies, regular medications, or the name of someone who has your enduring power of attorney. Keep the information clear and up to date, reviewing it at least once a year.

If you live alone, consider giving a copy of your emergency contacts to a trusted neighbour or close relative. Likewise, if you have a neighbour who lives on their own, you might agree to be each other’s emergency contact. It’s a simple way to strengthen your support network and provide reassurance.

A printed contact list provides another layer of preparation for those moments when technology isn’t available or time is critical. It’s one of the easiest things you can do today that could make a real difference tomorrow.
