Packing your passport is only the first step. Before you head off on your next holiday, take a little time to make copies of your most important travel documents. It may seem unnecessary when everything is going to plan, but if something is lost or stolen, those copies can make a stressful situation much easier to manage.

Start with your passport, travel insurance policy, flight confirmations, accommodation bookings, and any tickets you’ve purchased in advance. If you’re travelling overseas, it’s also helpful to have a copy of your driver’s licence and a list of any prescription medications you take.

Keep the copies separate from the originals. If your passport is in your day bag, store the photocopy in your suitcase. You can also save digital copies in a secure cloud storage service or password-protected folder on your phone, giving you another way to access them if your belongings go missing.

It’s a good idea to leave a set of copies with a trusted family member or friend at home as well. If you need information while you’re away, they can quickly send it to you without having to search through your paperwork.

While you’re organising your documents, make a note of important contact numbers. This might include your travel insurer, airline, bank, and the nearest embassy or consulate if you’re travelling internationally. Having these details readily available can save valuable time if you need assistance.

Finally, check that your passport has enough validity for your destination. Many countries require passports to remain valid for several months beyond your planned departure date, so it’s worth confirming the requirements well before you travel.

A few photocopies may not seem exciting. But they can save hours of inconvenience if the unexpected happens. Spending ten minutes preparing before you leave can help you travel with greater confidence and enjoy your holiday knowing you’re ready for whatever comes your way.
