We’re often encouraged to get from one place to another as quickly as possible. The fastest route, the shortest queue, the quickest errand. While there’s nothing wrong with being efficient, always rushing can mean missing some of life’s quieter pleasures.

Every now and then, choose the scenic route instead. Drive along the coast rather than the motorway, take a different walking track through your local park, or wander through a neighbourhood you’ve never explored before. You don’t need to travel far to discover something new.

Changing your routine has a way of making familiar places feel fresh again. You might notice a café you’ve never visited, a public garden in bloom, or a lookout with a view you didn’t know existed. Even a short detour can turn an ordinary outing into something memorable.

Taking the slower path also encourages you to be more present. Instead of focusing on getting to your destination, you have time to appreciate birdsong, changing seasons, interesting architecture, or a friendly chat with someone you meet along the way. These are often the moments that stay with us longest.

You don’t have to save this mindset for holidays. A trip to the supermarket, a visit to the library, or an afternoon drive can all become more enjoyable when you allow yourself a little extra time. Sometimes the journey itself is every bit as rewarding as the destination.

Life doesn’t always have to be measured by how much you get done. Sometimes it’s measured by what you notice along the way. The next time you head out, consider taking the road you don’t usually choose. You may arrive a little later, but you’ll probably come home with a story worth telling.
