Many parents and grandparents want to lend a hand. Whether it’s contributing to a house deposit, helping with university costs, or covering an unexpected expense, supporting family can be deeply rewarding. But before saying yes, it’s important to make sure your own financial future remains secure.

Start by asking yourself whether you can genuinely afford the help. It’s easy to focus on today’s needs without considering how they might affect your savings in five or ten years’ time. Remember that once money has been given away, it may not be available if your own circumstances change.

If you’re planning to lend money rather than give it as a gift, have an open conversation about expectations. Agree on how much is being borrowed, whether it will be repaid, and over what timeframe. Putting the agreement in writing doesn’t mean you don’t trust each other. It simply helps avoid misunderstandings later.

Try not to feel pressured into making a quick decision. Financial requests often come during stressful situations, but it’s perfectly reasonable to say you need a day or two to think things through. Taking time to review your budget or speak with a trusted adviser can help you make a decision you’ll feel comfortable with.

It’s also worth remembering that support doesn’t always have to be financial. Looking after grandchildren, sharing professional experience, helping with home repairs, or simply offering encouragement can be just as valuable as writing a cheque.

Looking after your own finances gives you the independence and security to continue supporting the people you care about in ways that are sustainable. The greatest gift you can often give your family is knowing that you’re financially prepared for whatever the future may bring.
