Why You Should Keep a Travel Journal

Not every holiday is remembered for the big attractions. Sometimes it’s the café where you met a friendly local, the unexpected lookout you stumbled across, or the conversation you had while waiting for a ferry that stays with you long after you’ve returned home. A travel journal is a wonderful way to capture those moments before they fade from memory.
Keeping a journal doesn’t mean writing pages every night. A few sentences about where you went, what you saw, and how you felt are often enough. You might jot down the name of a favourite restaurant, a scenic walking track, or something funny that happened during the day. Years later, those small details can bring an entire trip flooding back.
Your journal can be as simple or as creative as you like. Some people prefer a notebook they can tuck into their bag, while others use the notes app on their phone or tablet. You could even add postcards, tickets, maps, or printed photographs to create a keepsake that’s enjoyable to look through long after the holiday has ended.
A travel journal is also something you can share. Grandchildren often enjoy hearing stories about places you’ve visited, and a journal makes it easier to remember the little details that don’t appear in holiday photos. It can also be a useful reference if you decide to return to a destination and want to revisit a favourite café, attraction, or walking trail.
Don’t worry about your handwriting or writing style. This isn’t a book that anyone is marking. It’s simply a record of your own experiences, written in your own words. The memories are what matter, not perfect grammar or polished sentences.
A travel journal helps preserve those stories, turning a wonderful holiday into something you can relive again and again, even years after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.
