QR Codes Are Everywhere. Here’s How to Use Them Safely

They’ve quietly become part of everyday life. You scan one to read a café menu, pay for parking, join the Wi-Fi at a hotel, or check in at an event. QR codes are convenient because they save you from typing long web addresses into your phone. Most of the time, they’re completely legitimate.
The problem is that scammers have noticed how much we trust them. A fake QR code can send you to a fraudulent website that looks almost identical to a genuine one. You might think you’re paying for parking, making a restaurant booking, or logging into your bank, when in fact you’re handing your details to someone else. It’s a growing type of scam that’s easy to miss because the code itself gives you no clues about where it leads.
Fortunately, staying safe doesn’t require any technical knowledge. Before tapping the link that appears after scanning a QR code, take a moment to read the website address. Does it look like the official website? Is the company name spelt correctly? If anything seems unusual, close the page and visit the organisation’s website another way instead.
It’s also worth paying attention to where the QR code is displayed. A professionally printed sign inside a museum or on a council noticeboard is generally more trustworthy than a sticker that’s been placed over another code.
In recent years, scammers have been caught placing fake QR code stickers on parking meters and public payment machines, hoping people won’t notice the difference.
If you’re unsure, don’t feel pressured to scan it at all. Many businesses are happy to provide a printed menu, tell you the web address, or accept payment another way. Asking for an alternative isn’t inconvenient—it’s sensible.
QR codes are a useful tool, and there’s no reason to avoid them altogether. Like any technology, they’re safest when used with a little awareness. The next time you point your phone at a QR code, don’t rush. A quick glance at where it’s taking you could be the simplest security check you make all day.
