Travelling with Prescription Medication? Plan Ahead

Packing for a holiday usually means thinking about clothes, chargers, and whether you’ve remembered your passport. Medication deserves a place on that checklist too.
If you take prescription medicine every day, a little preparation before you leave home can save a great deal of stress later. The last thing anyone wants is to discover they’ve packed too few tablets, misplaced an important prescription, or arrived in another country only to learn that certain medications have special entry requirements.
Start by checking that you have enough medication to cover your entire trip, plus a few extra days in case your return is delayed. Flights can be cancelled, weather can disrupt travel, and unexpected situations do happen. Having a small buffer means one less thing to worry about if your plans change.
It’s also a good idea to keep medicines in their original packaging with the pharmacy label attached. If you’re travelling overseas, customs officials may ask questions about prescription medication, and clearly labelled containers can make the process much smoother. Carry essential medicines in your hand luggage rather than your checked suitcase, just in case your luggage is delayed or goes missing.
Before travelling internationally, speak with your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns. Some countries have restrictions on medications that are commonly prescribed in New Zealand, and you may need supporting documentation. Your healthcare provider can also advise whether your medicines should be stored in a particular way, especially if you’re visiting a hot climate.
While you’re planning, take a moment to think beyond medication itself. A simple list of your prescriptions, dosages, allergies, and emergency contacts can be invaluable if you need medical care while you’re away. Keeping a digital copy on your phone and a printed copy in your travel wallet provides extra peace of mind.
Travelling with a medical condition shouldn’t stop you from exploring new places. It simply means planning a little more carefully before you leave. Once that’s taken care of, you can spend less time worrying about what’s in your suitcase and more time enjoying the journey ahead.
