Have you ever gone looking for one photo and ended up scrolling through pictures from five years ago?

It starts with something simple. You’re trying to find a recipe, a picture of the grandchildren, or the snapshot you took of your parking space at the airport. Then, somewhere along the way, you come across an old holiday, a birthday celebration, or the family dog as a puppy. Suddenly, twenty minutes have disappeared.

Our phones have quietly become memory boxes. Long before we realise it, they’re holding thousands of moments that would once have been tucked into photo albums or stored in shoeboxes under the bed.

The trouble is, those memories often stay hidden. Many people take hundreds of photos every year but rarely go back to enjoy them. New pictures push the old ones further down the screen until they’re almost forgotten. Every so often, it’s worth taking a slow scroll backwards.

You might rediscover the garden before the trees grew tall, your first trip after retirement, or a family gathering that everyone still talks about. It’s surprising how a single photograph can bring back the smell of the sea, the sound of grandchildren laughing, or the feeling of standing somewhere you’d waited years to visit.

While you’re there, consider creating a few albums. You don’t need dozens. One for family, another for holidays, perhaps one for the garden or favourite recipes. It makes finding those memories much easier the next time you want to share them.

And don’t let your best photos live only on your phone. Print a few. Frame one for the hallway. Turn another into a calendar or photo book. Digital memories are wonderful, but there’s still something special about holding a favourite picture in your hands.

Technology often gets blamed for distracting us. Sometimes, though, it quietly gives us one of the nicest gifts of all. A chance to revisit moments we’d almost forgotten.
